Depends what you're after – but the most popular used convertibles include the effortlessly stylish Mini Convertible, the four-seater, premium-feeling BMW 4 Series Convertible, and the sporty Mazda MX-5. City car lovers can do no wrong with the Fiat 500C, while the BMW Z4 makes for an exquisite grand-touring convertible – perfect for summer blasts to the south of France.

Often, yes. Whether rightly or wrongly, insurers often see convertibles as sportier cars, which can push premiums up. Some insurers have a largely outdated notion they're easier to break in to – which isn't really true of modern convertibles.

The most popular small convertibles at are the Fiat 500C and Mini Convertible. Both are easy to park and don't feel intimidatingly large to drive. Fancy something sportier? The Mazda MX-5 is also a very small car that comes with either a fabric or metal convertible roof. 

There are pros and cons to both. Hard tops tend to be quieter at high speeds with the roof up (although modern soft-top roofs have lots of sound deadening to help with this), and some people prefer the look of a painted roof. Soft-tops, meanwhile, are lighter – meaning they can help a car feel sportier in corners than a hard-top equivalent, while also returning marginally better fuel economy.
