Can I sell a car with existing finance?
Yes, you can sell cars with outstanding finance to Motorpoint. We can help you settle finance whether you are in positive or negative equity:
- Positive equity – we’ll use the money from your sale to pay the outstanding finance on your car, with the remaining balance being transferred to your bank account
- Negative equity – we’ll pay the balance from your sale to the finance company, but you will need to have the funds to pay the remaining balance at the same time
How much is my car worth?
The easiest way to find out how much your car could be worth is by getting an instant valuation.
There are several factors that will impact the valuation of your car.
- Condition – the better the condition, the more money you’ll get for it
- Service history – a car with a full service history will be valued higher
- MOT – cars with a decent amount of MOT left usually have fewer major issues
- Mileage – cars with less mileage typically have less wear and tear
- Keys – a car with all its original keys will be worth more than a car with missing keys
What happens when I sell my car to Motorpoint?
Once you've received your final online valuation, choose an appointment day and time at your nearest Motorpoint store to drop your car off.
At your appointment we’ll check your vehicle and the information provided as part of the valuation process all matches, and that it meets our vehicle assumptions.
Once the sale is completed, payment is made to your nominated bank account. You do not need to buy another car from Motorpoint to sell your vehicle to us.
What happens when I sell my car to Motorpoint
What documents do I need to bring when I sell my car?
You will need to bring the following documents with you to complete the sale of your car:
- Proof of ID – either a photocard driving licence with the address matching the car’s V5C, or a passport and proof of address dated within the past three months
- V5C/Logbook – in the name of the person selling the car
- MOT certificate – minimum one month’s MOT on date of handover
- Spare keys if available
- Service history if available
- A copy of your finance settlement letter if you have outstanding finance to be cleared OR a clearance letter if you have recently paid off any finance on the car
- Retention proof – for cherished, private, or personalised plates.
- Bank details, so we can make any payment due to you
Why valuations may change
We pay out 99% of valuations as quoted. Once you have received your instant initial valuation, we will ask more detailed questions about the specific condition of your car, allowing us to give you a more accurate final valuation before you proceed to sell your car.
There are a minority of occasions when we may have to reduce the price offered at your appointment, as the condition of your car doesn’t match the information you provided during the detailed final valuation, including:
- Age and mileage discrepancies
- Condition (undeclared damage to the body work, or other mechanical / engine faults)
- Less MOT remaining than stated
- Missing keys or charging cables (that we haven't been informed about)
What cars can I sell to Motorpoint?
We can purchase vehicles that are privately owned (i.e. not a lease or company car). We will make the following assumptions about your vehicle when providing the initial and final valuations:
- It runs and drives
- Has no mechanical or electrical faults
- No warning lights displayed on the dashboard
- At the point of sale, your car will have at least 1 month’s valid MOT
- It has not been imported
- It has not been an insurance total loss/write-off or salvage vehicle
- All tyres meet the legal standard
- All alloys and wheel trims are present
- No aftermarket modifications (these can be mechanical or cosmetic changes, inside or outside the car).
- Locking wheel nut is present
- If it has a convertible roof, it should be fully working with no damage
- All electric vehicles must come with charging cables as supplied by the manufacturer
- Is privately owned and isn't registered to a business, fleet provider, or leasing company (i.e., isn't used as a company car)
How quickly will I be paid when I sell my car to Motorpoint?
