1. Volkswagen Tiguan
Perhaps the perfect all-rounder, the Volkswagen Tiguan has quietly replaced the Golf and the Passat as the brand's most popular car. It's comfortable, spacious and extremely easy to use, with used examples avoiding the fiddly touch controls fitted to more recent VW models. Plus, the solid build quality, secure handling and hushed, neatly trimmed cabin make long journeys a breeze. Your £20,000 budget affords a three-year-old example in popular Life or Match trims, or you could consider the similar but slightly smaller Volkswagen T-Roc.

2. Hyundai Tucson
Unless you're new here, you'll know that we love the Hyundai Tucson. It features in a number of our best lists, because it is simply brilliant. We could talk about one of the biggest boots of any family-size SUV, or the huge rear-seat space, or the high-tech interior with big screens and fancy materials. Even so, you'll probably be drawn in by the futuristic looks. Snagging a Tucson for under £20,000 seems like a bargain to us and, while most cars available come in the cheapest SE Connect spec (which is still fantastically well equipped), you'll find some higher-spec examples available too.
The Kia Sportage uses a lot of the same parts as the Tucson and can be had within budget, too.

3. Skoda Enyaq
The Skoda Enyaq is also one of our favourite SUVs, with the added benefits of a fully electric powertrain. So that's brisk acceleration to jump out of junctions, luxury car levels of space (thanks to not having an engine to package), and cheap home charging costs. Insurance costs are perfectly reasonable for the handsome Skoda, too. You'll get a 60 model with the medium-sized 58kWh battery for this budget, which is good for 200 miles in the real world, and 120kW fast-charging that lets you top up to 80% on the motorway in the time it takes to queue up for some overpriced coffees.

4. Mini Countryman
The Mini Countryman makes no pretence of being 'mini' but, in this case, that's a good thing. This, finally, is a Mini with proper space for adults or bulky child seats, and trades away very little of the fun, rebellious character you find in the brand's smaller cars. The Countryman has the same sharp, quick steering and fantastic body control, but with a dash more compliance that makes long drives easier. £20,000 buys a three-year-old Countryman, including cars with the punchy 178hp Cooper S engine.

5. Ford Kuga
Your £20,000 budget buys the latest Ford Kuga, which launched in 2020. Go for a three-year-old car and you’ve got the pick of the range, from the plush Titanium to the sporty ST-Line. Inside, the simply laid out cabin is well made and more than spacious enough for a family of four, and you get a handy infotainment system and parking sensors as standard to make driving less of a chore. The smaller Ford Puma is also available, with newer and higher-spec versions coming in under budget.

6. MG HS
The MG HS is one of the most spacious five-seaters on this list, so it's perfect if you're transporting teenagers – or don't want your seatback kicked by younger passengers. Further forward, the HS feels more premium than its affordable price might suggest, and the screens manage to be modern and user-friendly. The HS is best when the petrol has some electric assistance, and for this budget you can pick a nearly new 'Hybrid+' HS. Powerful, easy to drive, no faff and the promise of 50mpg – this really is a great choice. There's also the smaller MG ZS Hybrid+ that's available in a higher trim level for the same budget if you don't need the HS' massive boot.

7. Mazda CX-5
The Mazda CX-5 is a welcome reprieve if you think most SUVs are too reliant on big touchscreens and exist to simply get you from A to B. Its handsome looks hide a sophisticated and high-quality interior, which is full of soft-touch materials and actual buttons that make everything easy to use while driving. The digital driver's display is hidden in a set of classy analogue dials, and the infotainment screen isn't actually a touchscreen for most of the time. What's more, the CX-5 manages to be grown up and practical without losing its fun side – you might actually enjoy driving it down a twisty road.

8. Nissan Qashqai
Late 2021 saw the arrival of the latest Nissan Qashqai with heavily updated looks and an even more heavily overhauled interior – now featuring the kind of build quality that'd make a German car blush. A budget of £20,000 buys a one- or two-year-old Qashqai with low mileage and the 1.3-litre turbocharged petrol engine – you'll have to wait a little longer for the e-Power full-hybrid model to fall below that threshold, however. Like all Qashqais before it, there's little to excite you about this family SUV, but its comfy, well-made, practical cabin makes it simple to live with.

9. Hyundai Kona
Now a top small SUV, the Hyundai Kona offers plenty to get your juices flowing. You'll be drawn in by its futuristic, robot-like styling, and then you'll settle in to an interior that has a lot of screens, but a lot of buttons too. An ideal mix of digital and analogue. Take your pick from petrol, hybrid and fully electric options – there really is a Kona to suit nearly every buyer. The latest Kona is a lot more practical and a lot more premium than its predecessor, so it's now big enough for family duties.

10. Peugeot 5008
Peugeot's largest SUV is a top choice if you want seven seats and a bit of style for under £20,000. It features the same eye-catching looks from the five-seat 3008 but more versatility. Like a lot of seven-seat SUVs, the third row of seats is really there for occasional use – it'll feel like a squeeze if you use all seven seats all of the time. Economy-minded petrol and diesel engines keep running costs in check, while the interior is generally quite user-friendly with physical controls and brightly coloured touchscreen icons.
